There was an article in Digital Audio Insiderabout the Google Music service.I had a test by logging into my google account through Google Music page.By logging in into my (finnish) accountI will get a blunt message showing "We're sorry. Google Music is currently only available in the United States"

It´s nothing newto digital music fans that big search engine names willrelease a music service such as Google.For example there has been digital music from indie artists for manyyears through Yahoo. The music page itself will get internet search results from artists with similar name. How about "Balkan Beat Box - Digital Monkey" and "Digital Beat Machines"

Now what´s the catch with Google forindependent and bedroom musicians.They will sell music for similar price to iTunes.Selling point might be important because manyof independent musicians just makemusic as a part time hobby andhardly sell any music at all.This is because it´s not forthe money but the creativity part. Anyway there was some interestingcomparison chart with three ofthe well known (not propably most paying off ones).I will look forward to have thisservice in Europe and in Finland too.

Fighting against bad music and loudness wars

Maybe you have heard this term called
anti music? Well if you don´t have then
you should learn what it means.

Just face it that music nowadays has become
more or less listenable. In terms of
enjoying the music it has become too
loud because of too heavy compression.
This might not just be the problem with
producers but also with big labels
that have decided whose next cd release will sound
louder. The hotness in this case not understood
as a market term but as a sound engineering
term when the dynamic range is compressed to
death so that the dynamic variation in a music
track will be very little because every instrument is just
so damn loud. Even whispering voice should be compressed
and maximised to hear it through the music.

In digital production the decibel
range is quite wide that gives the
opportunity for producers to use it
or in most cases abuse it.

Reverbnation Fair Share - pennies coming in from ads - Get real

There´s a little advertising program in Reverbnation
called Fair Share. It gives artist some money
depending of the traffic from placed ads.
Some artists including me are curious if it generates
any money or not. Well it does but very little.
However it´s free to join and you get free pennies
from your work. Still some artists out there like
to think that it would be possible to make living by
generating income from this kind of ad traffic programs
are naive.

With my statistics it´s giving only some pennies
when some artists have been claiming that of it giving out
some dollars between 5 to 10 dollars a month.
I still cannot believe because I have not seen their
statistics. However I have received some pennies
per month and have been artist since 2008.
During that time I´ve almost received
41 FairShare Payments of total $5.57.

Get real and manage your business yourself and stop living in
your daily pipedreams.
Any bands should know they should have
a good management agency to book more gicks. The artist
can also be just another bedroom musician.
This kind of artist really should be making
some intro and background music for games, television and
broadcast and get royalties this way.
Nowadays it´s not really easy to make living with legal downloads.
Most listeners usually only want to listen music for free or with low payment when streaming online music. Ads and ad programs will never pay your online music.
However you have to pay for music storage if you want to upload
more music.
On the positive side youtube and social networks like myspace music, soundcloud, and bandcamp are now making some lesser known artists more visible in the Internet. Also Spotify is a free and legal music application which has been available for a good amount of time. Spotify will generate some low amount of royalties but for me it´s generating plays all the time.

It´s not the money in the Internet it´s the artist visibility in various platforms.
It´s also possible to sync between reverbnation and other third party websites such as myspace.

Lesson learned: Forget about the ad programs and get out of your room into the reality!

Great psytrance from Russia - Dissociactive

Check out this great sounding psytrance album Total Transformation by Dissociactive.
Artist name is Vyacheslav Iskanyan.

This is a genuinely fresh air for psychedelic trance genre. I have to mention that I am not a very intense follower of any specific genre it´s only that I happened to listen a shoutcast channel on one spanish rave community today in Ning. Of course I rarely even listen to shoutcast. Anyway this really picked my interest right in the beginning.
Just like the cover art makes very clear this is a pure musical piece of art by a sonic wizard.

Unfortunately what is missing from the current psytrance music is a good and interesting groove. This is not just simple to create with common monotonic psytrance bass but with a good combination of different rhythmic percussive sounds. Also with textured arpeggiated synth sequences. This is hard to describe if you have not listened Total Transformation. Some songs are much more organic than others. For example Bioreaction has got some really interesting stuff and the bassline is varied nicely. There´s good headspace with ambient pads on the background.
The whole album is perhaps more close to oldschool goa trance than most recent psytrance albums.

You are also given the opportunity to listen the album for free online in Bandcamp page. Anyway it´s not very expensive if you buy a download for only 3 euros for the full album download or just 7 euros for the download and album. The shipping was just 3 euros worldwide. It´s digipack limited edition only of 500.
I heartily recommend for you to buy the album not just listen online. :-)

Satan and Kraftwerk plays electropop - The Knife

This electropop sounds like Satanic circus music together with Kraftwerk. The vocals in some parts are male and in some parts female.
The sound is both dark and twisted but not too melancholic because there´s lot of fast melodies and timbrals.
I find it very odd sounding first but fun with twisted synthlines and arpeggios
which reminds me of 8-bit videogames and industrial synthpop.

Most of DJ music is total crap - Beatport sucks

Inspired by this blog about Beatport

I personally think that most of the trend dance music is
total crap. Even if it is well produced and sounding good the
value of the music as a listenable music can be very bad.
Not only beatport is selling mass marketed bulk dance but
there´s some artists like Scooter who are proud to produce
euro rave which is really bad sounding commercial dance music.

Typically the mass marketed electronic dance music is
made for large ignorant masses of people who will categorize the
music as techno no matter what subgenre it really is. Electro, breakbeat, breaks,
drum and bass will be gategorised just all as dance or just techno.

Generally dance music had been always made and marketed with the popularity of artist and lead synths/hooks appearing. It should be appealing if it´s just for the big masses. Music TV made the first big change in artists popularity. Also some of the commercial artists noticed this and brought all kind of mediocre shit around.
Later in the millennium new online dance music stores made unknown artists better known to big masses of consumers and dj´s. The music has not to be good if it´s presented in either TV or some well known online music outlet. At the end a good musical taste can tell if it´s another beutifully wrapped shit track on a silver plate.

Back to Beatport it´s only raw numbers and money not really about good music. Beatport however seems to have some control of what amount the label has to sell in order to keep it on their store. 2 years ago in 2008 beatport even culled out some labels because they did not sold enough. Some underground music can be too different for a DJ and chart success?

How can any DJ music be good ever?

I have always preferred more original online stores like Psyshop with interesting and innovative artists such as Psycho Punk, DJ Tsuyoshi and some quite dark psytrance labels like Shaman Films. This music is perhaps not for everyone but at least it´s not for the ignorant consumer masses of music. Psytrance is the most innnovative and underground sounding music at the moment. I am not talking about Infected Mushroom because after becoming more popular their sound became more pop sounding. It´s not very innovative at the moment as some of many upcoming psytrance artists in the scene. But at least I.M. is popular and not any typical dance group.

There´s some naturally amazing new talent also in myspace who actually give out their music for free. This duo which I personally found interesting is a psytrance duo from Israel that I already found in 2008 in myspace.
I hate when how some people prejudice everything by the politics and war in Israel. I have begun to dislike cold and cynical people even more because I know artists in Israel will hate the war and killing and still try to manage their music career and creativity in their unstable nation. People who are honest and with heart in their music should be all respected no matter what.

Vtech - Inertia EP review

Vtech is a Drum and Bass producer from Finland. He makes dark and fast paced sounding
Drum and Bass with some occasional ragga vocals.

First track Gangsters Anthem name implies for something about Gangster Rap but offers something very different what is expected. Vtech appears to use street talk phrases in many of his track names.
The track opens with a tiny synth melody and filtered breakbeats and after intro in 0:45 the gangster vocals come in. This track uses low bass only sparingly and nice distorted reece is coming quite late in 2:00 mark.
The mixing and dynamics works very well and usually in drum and bass scene some artists albums are either too loud or compressed to hell. The dynamics mix is both listenable and I believe it sounds just excellent with real PA on the dance floor.
Gangster combines an industrial ambient background with ripping reece leads and is very successful at that.

World Is a Ghetto has got nice breaks style with ragga vocals. Ragga vocals are sung by Ft. Mc Jahvice. His vocals suit perfectly for the Drum and Bass. Could not be any better than this. The track has got also some occasional acid synthlines. What a perfect addition to any breakbeat or Drum and Bass DJ stash.

Third track Black Ice style somehow reminds me of the classic and dark TeeBee tracks.
Very cool rhythmic reece bass is at its best when served with warm and distorted effects with some frohmage* (*editors note: Not sure if the produced uses Frohmage filtering. Just a personal note.) filtering to give listener a maximum drum and bass enjoyment. I am not familiar with origins of the speech department of this track but it surely gives some serious creeps in spine with some hysteric female screams and speech. Around 3:20 is very emotionally intensive with the "horror movie" genre. The track is very well mixed, layered and enjoyable to listen with headphones without head exploding.

The most industrial and eerie sounding track is the last track called Demise.
The ambience is propably the most interesting in this track of the whole bunch. I am able to find myself in a movie theme for a while with some swirling pads and other interesting sub fx. Let´s not forget the drum programming that is perhaps the most "junglistic" especially on the outro part. The outro kind of drum programming style makes me convinced that the producer has listened at least Goldies tracks. I still miss this kind of drum parts in other parts of this track. Anyway this was the most cinematic track on this EP.

Tenori-on - an interesting interactive electronic music device

I found this interesting electronic music device from a "if its hip it´s here" design blog.
You might have seen those ableton touch pads but this is much more advanced.
Tenori-On is made by Yamaha. It and has 16 control layers and you are able to create different cool light patterns onto it´s light matrix by pushing and activating led input buttons on the fly. The light matrix is 16x16 with is for both user input control and interactive light show with different modes.
There´s 6 different modes. The first might be familiar for those who have used some software studio sequencer of hardware sequencer. It´s the score mode where
user can enter notes in realtime and it is looping around. Just like in fruity loops but this is hardware. Ok let´s forget about fruity loops because this is a real electronic music instrument.

Jim O'Rourke video

There´s a SD memory card slot which can be used in same way as in common digital cameras and PSP etc. digital electronic devices to exchange data. You can load up your own samples from your computer into a memory card.
Still this device with cool design costs around 1200 $ so it´s not friendly for a wallet but I think it´s not just any music device from your local music instruments store.

Interesting combination with live playing cello and Tenori - On by the band called The Books. This band uses device in live performance. I like their style of acoustic contemporary electronic music with traditional instruments.

Celldweller - Wish Upon A Blackstar Chapter 02 - "audiowise review"

I have produced music myself over 18 years and listened even more. Nowadays and every year it seems that producers just want to make everything sound louder and louder. And what is even worse, loud all or most of the time. In my opinion Klayton has got some great talent as a producer but that´s not the issue here.
The problem really is that in the album Wish Upon a Blackstar chapter 02 the
guitars are compressed into full all the time. It´s very painful to listen that kind of guitar riffs.
Guitar struts and riffs with proper dynamics would sound so much better.
I must say I am not an audio purist at all but I just like well mixed and produced music. Not compressed to death.

For example: Klayton producing style is bit like with Metallicas latest album "Death Magnetic" and fans and audio engineers have told the Guitar Hero version was much more listenable because it was almost 10dB quieter than the album version.

You don´t have to impress listener all the time like in some big movie soundtrack or in tv commercial where the audio is often compressed heavily to "wow the listener".
Please bring back the dynamics into music and save my and other peoples hearing ability.

Other than that the first chapter was really enjoyable but the second chapter is disappointing because there´s no music which can be listened to through the loudness.
Despite of the title "Louder than Words" has got much better mix with the guitars and overall production is very much better thought and laid out.
If the same trend continues I will not waste my money on this loudness garbage. Louder is better but too loud is bad. :shock:

"Eon" it´s trying too hard and it´s almost painful to listen to. It´s totally overproduced and too loud for most of the time. You don´t have to compress everything into full. Less is more. Same thing with track "The best it´s gonna get".
I was bit disappointed for this album. The first chapter was much more listenable. I think Klayton should learn to produce music not to kill his fans ears. I gave it only two stars.

Redeemed the codes but what we still miss?

The bandcamp.com is so technically superior that they want to give artists this neat system which is able to generate random download codes for their album downloads.
I didn´t found this very useful because I tried to post the codes into discussion
forums and then one by one check out which one was redeemed.
The system does track each code and gives out a redeemed list as a csv file which then can be downloaded into your (artists) computer.

Now after 2 days of sitting at the front of my pc I wondered why the hell they
just didn´t invent a technique that makes people to buy music. Of course because they should be geniuses in new web technology and social advertising?
On the bright side it gave me a lot of traffic for the website but also some bunch of negative comments of the code system and my music.
Why the hell they do that?
I want to direct all my frustration to the system. It´s not the peoples fault who only want to listen my music whether they like it or not. Still some people did not like to download music for free because it was that there was not any previews of music on the code redeeming page.

So my addendum for that page would be a preview clips of all the tracks. Not just a dull slot to enter the code which I also found a bit stupid. To download something music you cannot even preview on the same page!

We artists who make music also as a part time work are interested of getting paid a nickle for it. But anyway it´s a free service and there´s not monthly payment as in some music websites. :D

I could add whole album free for the sake it´s easier for people to get it for free
without entering any code.

Weird electronic instrument - Otamatone

I saw this funny note shaped instrument on Jetdaisuke´s Youtube channel. He is very creative and funny japanese guy makes video previews of electronic music instruments for web. It has got also a mouth and a face. It comes in different colors but personally I prefer blck because notes are black? Very funny instrument.

In my opinion. Why just shut the fuck up and listen to mainstream rock bands since you don´t seem to understand a shits worth about real electronic music.

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

My review:
This album has got the real Prodigy back together. It´s a modern fusion of the good old and classic rave sounds, hits and stabs that Prodigy had already in the early 90´s. But topped with modern drum and bass reece basses and glitch tweaking. Not to forget about distorted synth sounds and breakbeat loops.
Just listen to track "Take Me to the Hospital". I first saw the video before getting the whole album which then blew my mind when I listened it with my headphones!
This album is not just for harassing your neighbour with your stereos but also good for listening and on the dancefloor. The track "Warriors Dance" has got some really nice old school vocals in 90´s style.
For my surprise the album had one nice analog synth style of track "Omen Reprise".
This is a different version from second track on the album "Omen"
They could have also renamed that into "Omen synth" because the track does not have any beats.

The production is modern but in true The Prodigy (the original band) style. Not just one man behind his computer. I think the previous Prodigy albums did suffer badly from the other band members absence. Of course I am talking about "Always Outnumbered _Never_Outgunned". For true I only liked only couple of tracks on that album.

The album features drummer Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) on drums for "Run with the Wolves".

It is said that some bands left the worst song to the last but this is not the case with The Prodigy. The real recorded drumming with horn sections and with TB Acid lines mark 3:00. This track is just like a cherry on the top of the album!

My tears almost felled on my cheeks and my skin went onto goose pumps because it felt so good to listen to this "Stand Up". It´s just like a "farewell to listener" style of song on very last on the album.
This track reminds me of Chemical Brothers style when they remixed Oasis but this is way much better.

If you want to design ugly robots go Josh Nizzi

I loved transformers when I was a kid. Now this new hollywood director Michael Bay with no real connection to original transformers series or origin hires a designer Josh Nizzi who made the robots to look hideous piles of metal junk.
I am not saying he is a bad artist, but I only don´t like the "modern" style of the Autobots and Decepticons. Of course modeling techniques have evolved since 80´s and the shapes can be much more complex. However I feel the effects industry are trying to force mass audience to swallow too much in one big piece.
The design process techniques are also sold to other artists in the industry. It´s still interesting how these mean and ugly things are made. One can purchase videos how to make such ugly shit as the designer himself.

I have to emphasize I don´t personally hate Michael Bay or any designer involved in this movie. He´s only a director who does his job. I only hate bad movies with only purpose to be mass produced mindless entertainment with cheap stories. These movies are like junk meals in McDonalds. They are consumed fast and next day forgotten. (btw: McDonalds is a food chain which I really do hate)

In my opinion the first part of movie was enough for me to convince that the original idea was totally raped. The idea was raped by making transformers all american patriotic and stupid american shit without any of the original fun seen in the tv-series in 80´s. The movie was totally just a showcase of new 3d-animation techniques and special effects with a stupid teenage highschool story.
As 3d-animation it´s really good but as watched it is just another too long vfx-advertisement of cars embedded into a movie. It´s main purpose for me is to sell the different car models to different types of consumers. Core of target group at the youngest typically is a 18 year boy who supposedly already have a freshly obtained driving licence.
And one that will not question things but blindly straight after seen the movie will go into General Motors car store to see the cars.

Originally the bumblebee was volkswagen and in modern version they had to make it from Chevy. Otherwise it would be not american since Volkswagen is from Europe. I am not anti-American but I felt it was purely done as a patriotic movie heavy product placement and marketing of Chevy automobiles.
So marketing forces quite much have dictated the car models seen in the movie.

Bumblebee name is also a moniker of the Volkswagen car model Beetle and in my opinion think the Chevy car cannot be bumblebee. I bet many new american transformer fans must be ignorant to this fact. In Finland it´s called "Kupla" and in Sweden "Bubbla".

Despite of all kind of allegations Michael Jackson was the
best artist in whole pop industry. He had all talent in one person:
dancer, singer and entertainer.

I remember having his hit album Thriller on a cassette and the poster on a wall when I was a kid.
I was a fan at that time. His songs still moves me. Beat It, Bad and Thriller are super hits of all time.

I am oldschool headbanger and metal fan. I also like some good rock bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Queen who make great music. Well Nirvana died along Curt but their music still lives. Ex Nirvana member (drummer) later formed Foo Fighter btw.

Foo fighter is also a great rock band with more energetic and hard edged sound than the usual mass produced bands out there.

Now there´s some brightheaded wannabe rockstars like Nickelback and let´s take for example a similar sounding so called "christian" band Creed.
What you get is well recorded quitars but when you start to listen to the vocals they are nasal and thin. In common these bands sound overproduced crap for the masses that don´t know shit about real rock music. It´s not rock it´s easy listening pop crap.

Why don´t just listen to Metallica or AC/DC if you want to go for a real rock concert?

I have seen and listened both Metallica and Megadeth live in Helsinki. They rule and are real metal bands and real artists with their original sound without any label dictated compromises. Originally Metallica was released by their first label Megaforce records. Later or let´s say quite early 80´s they got deal with Elektra records.
If you are a noob and don´t know nothing about Metallica then I suggest you to listen the record Master of Puppets and from album And Justice for all... the song "One". The song "One" is a story about an injured soldier who has lost all his arms and legs in war and trapped alive in his body.

Megadeth lyrics are more anti political and usually against war. Dave Mustaine is perhaps bit more like an introverted person and perhaps a bit more too self confident for his own good. He should take more audience for ones account. For my liking Metallica is better to take audience and therefore that´s the reason why they are more successfull than Megadeth. Megadeth is quite much more talented in quitar solos than Metallica but their music is more like oldschool trash metal than Metallica has got some classical melodies embedded in their songs when Megadeth have got their speed solos with insane finger technique.
Kirk Hammet the guitarist of Metallica is a huge fan of classical music and that´s why the melodies do have so clear classical music impact.
In conclusion Megadeth is more technical band than Metallica which is more like riff based, thematic and melodic.

When I look back in early nineties there´s many bands I have listened. Also some more hardcore and grindcore metal. As a teenager I was a real die hard metal music freak who listened all good music that was available.
Some great Death Metal bands of all time is Deicide. It´s a satanic death metal from Florida, USA. For true I have only listened their first album "Deicide" when it came.
One time I have listened King Diamond but got tired of his high pitched falsetto voice. You can call this also satanic metal but I just call it Horror Metal because of horror like stories their music has. I think their image may look bit satanic but for me it´s more like a joke. Come on Kiss had their masks too?

Anthrax was one of the favorite new wave nu metal bands that really got my attention.
This is the one of the first bands that really invented the nu metal of today.
If you don´t know anything about this band you are either listening some of those mainstream bands, you don´t know really shit about metal or have no fucking tiniest interest about real oldschool numetal thrash!

Jean Michel Jarre in Helsinki

Saturday I saw Jean Michel Jarre live in Helsinki.
This was also the first time I saw and listened his music live. He´s not playing alone and has got many people which makes the band. One playing drums, other musician on second synth and also some noises/effects.
Jarre indoor gick was a real enjoyment both sonically and visually. The sound system was said to be new and all the frequencies were clear and perfect. Even the lowest basses we´re rumbling nicely in a big Hartwall arena in Helsinki.
Our seats were quite nice and on the bottom floor just in the tenth row.
Jarre has been always a real musician but also a great person who takes the audience.
This was instantly seen in his performance. He tend not to be some superstar (he is but) he seems both cheerful and humble man than obnoxious and uptight person.
I feel this makes him stand out from rest of the electronic artists.

All the evergreen songs like Oxygene and rest were in the program. But the trademark instrument that is really great looking on stage was the laser harp. It must be over 500 mW strong special laser. Jarre had these special goggles and gloves when he played it. The stage lights and lasers were also programmed to accompany the music and were visually very nice apart from some light spots that we´re pointing onto the audience. But only for a very short time. Also the laser harp "didn´t work" on second play but I think that looked like a practical joke that Jarre invented to entertain the audience. He started to play and there was no sound at first then after short break he came back and the laser harp worked just perfectly.

Beatmaka.com underground music with attitude? Or music without underground attitude?

I have submitted or at least tried to submit some of my tracks into a music website
called beatmaka.com. In my humble opinion Beatmaka.com slogan really does not do any favor to real underground scene since their music is mostly imitating all mainstream like music out there. When you visit and listen to every second artist you are able to notice there´s anything underground or original music on this website.

Every track sounds produced into best clarity and listening but there´s no real artistic talents that can produce original music outside the commercial club sound.

It is almost like a bedroom producers edition of DI.fm

There you have it. Another music website without underground attitude. Whoring to the commercial sound. I had only 2 tracks on this site and I have deleted another today. Now I have only one track and not wanting to upload more since the preview panel except that you produce the sound to meet some club standard sound.
Well there´s some better sites that you are free to upload without panel judgement process. For example reverbnation.com and myspace.com . It really does not help producers to develop their music or creative process when the track must be 100% ready and "pressed".
So from the creative point of view all music uploaded this site must be perfectly crafted and made as a final product for mass consumption.
But does this kind of process kill the creativity? In my opinion, yes.

I don´t want to bash the reviewer since they only do their job. But there´s nothing constructive on this review as it comes to artistic side.
The track is pretty simple. Perhaps it´s meant to be, right?
However there´s positive feedback about the idea.
So back to the production. Ok, no problem. Perhaps I make a club track with sidechain compression and limit the sound in Cool Edit and the track will be accepted.
From my point of view the panel does not seem to understand that there´s also some other forms of electronic music than that commercial (mostly crap) dance music they might only probably like. It´s often called synthesizer or electronic music and does not need to be pumped up as loud till your ears bleed. Of course there might be some EQ and mastering to be made
to make the track as final.
However sites like this give really narrow point of view about the electronic music in general.

Ok. So that´s enough critique about the review panel.

It´s not that bad site when you want to listen to some genres like
Trance, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass and Dance.

At last yet another good thing for fans of Digital Beat at last.fm, full length tracks!.

I noticed that many artists have only preview and for me as a listener I felt it was quite annoying to hear only some 30 seconds of each track.

I decided to release my old albums as full length and still receive royalties from every each listen. So there´s no full track downloads but full length listenable tracks.
All fans who want to listen my music online it´s much more convenient to listen all tracks in full length and not just 30 sec previews and I have got nothing to lose for sharing my music because of the last.fm royalty program.

Some independent musicians may know this music site www.numberonemusic.com
that sells promotion packs to get exposure.
I have tried this site for two of my projects. For Digital Beat and Finnlux Tuna.

I sent a threatening comment for numberonemusic.com last week in a style "Your site is a scam". Short time after that my page http://www.numberonemusic.com/digitalbeat was deleted. Can you see the problem? No artist page no evidence.
Also other things that I noticed:
- The forum is removed from the site.
- If you don´t pay artist page your plays stays zero

At the time I paid for example for Finnlux Tuna there was many plays on the artist page. I cannot be fooled because I have seen several mp3 sites since mp3.com days and there are always even some plays on artist stats. It´s very rare that artist has got zero daily plays on long period of time.
I have a strong doubt that they drive some bots or other traffic on artist page when the payment is on the file and then if you don´t pay then no daily plays on artist stats. You can see the difference?

How it works?
There is a mailing list signup option on artist page where fans can signup and get
e-mail from artist. For example about new music and album releases.

I got several hundreds of mailing list signups. There´s about 700 e-mail addresses on a single artist mailing list. Sounds good? Are you still convinced that these are real fans? When I paid for artist account I sent e-mails for these "fans" and got some very brief answers that were like "Keep doing your thang". "Cool Stuff"
But album sales still almost zero. Wonder why?

Why I released thru reverbnation? Here´s some cold facts:

1. Released only on the digital music stores with most of traffic.

After iTunes it´s released on other major digital music stores like Rhapsody, Napster, emusic etc.

2. Artist keeps 100% of royalties

The reason was that I wanted to try their distro was purely that there was no middle man. In reverbnation´s DD all the royalties are paid out straight to artists without any percentage taken off.

So in 5 years I got bit over 7000 hits and most hits from Ishkur.com where I bought
banner advertising. Hits from ishkur are 137 and most of traffic is between 1-4 hits per link/site.

At reverbnation after 2 years I have 27162 hits. This is because I have this cool widget that I can embed on various sites and blogs whatever.

You can see the difference? It´s awesome at reverbnation. :)

Street Fighter is an old classic video game from Capcom which is a japanese video games company. It´s sequel Street Fighter 2 was a real arcade hit and a pioneer in beat´em up games genre. SF 2 later inspired many fighting game releases like Mortal Combat. Mortal Combat had got some raw violence and it was quite different than SF series.

This is official and most complete information about
the forthcoming album yet.

The album graphics and the creative process

In the beginning of album art creation I made some background work for the album by googling articles and images about finnish Lapland.
At first I did not had enough inspiration for the album graphics. So
I used this background information to feed my brains
before doing any sketches. One can say that collecting information
is a small part of the whole creative process.

The graphics on the cover was inspired by the lapland
shaman imagery of the sun. If you have ever seen a shaman drum
from the Lapland then you may have seen these symbols of people, animals, nature
etc.

The symbolics are also based on the old finnish cosmology.

Then I combined the shaman imagery and the modern computer graphics but I let it be
as is without post producing it too much. This is because I wanted
it to be nineties trance cover style. My music "Dark Sun" is
not sounding like the mainstream trance of today. It´s more like
underground and personal vision of the genre combined with many electronic elements.
Music on the album is simply put:
not too much mainstream but artistic and creative style of trance
that is good to listen and dance.

Electro Psytrance. What the fucking genre is that?

I would like to bash this amateurish promotion newsletter to pieces. I respect the person who is writing this so I don´t reveal the name of the newsletter. Still the genre mistake made me angry and it´s the only reason I want to write this out.

Today I got this promotion newsletter X where I had submitted some info about my track
"Robotwerk". I am not a genre purist but I see red if someone is writing genre totally out of the line. So the track is pure electro/techno track and a bit reminding the style of Kraftwerk. One who knows the group surely knows it´s electro and techno when we speak in genres.

There´s tutorials how to create trance but there are bad trance influences and there are good trance influences.

In my opinion this is trance: Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, Prana, Hallucinogen and Younger Brother.

Learn yourself!

There´s no magic book which is going to tell you the secrets in creating trance. Just learn by doing. I started myself with Reason 1.0.
Other good option is to get some video tutorials from youtube.
Those are far much better than some static book with screenshots.
And what is better the tutorials in youtube are free. Some music tutorial sites does have some teaser trailers of their tutorials which will show only some part of the technique. But I recommend video tutorials because you can follow the whole procedure on the screen and see what button/effect you must choose. No quessing and watching static screenshots and wondering how it should sound like. Yes there is no sound in eBook. I don´t know if they have managed to put a sound in PDF file, right?

For those who don´t know yet. I removed all my songs from a finnish music community mikseri.net. This is not a publicity trick to get attention for my projects. This is a total personal frustration for this music community where small circle of people are dancing around themselves.
For 2 years ago I mentioned about their tasteless image policy. There was a certain image which really made me angry: a cat and an electric drill near the cat. The image was not visible to front page. It could be seen when artist logged in and was on the settings page.

This year about month ago I mentioned about this tasteless animal image again

In etchic sense there are some rules how you can use the images in public communities. Or at least should be. In my sense an internet community is a public forum. In the public forum there is a improvement forum where people can post suggestiongs how the site can be improved. In my suggestion was "the image and an electric drill near the cat made me feel angry".
Not only the image itself but the image with the text.

In my humble opinion it´s only how people would react when the text is saying "adjusting is important" and this is in the same context with the cat/drill image.

On the forums I got a short burst of hate messages which were deleted by admins.
Fortunately there was a short reply from the image creator who agreed to take all
the hate from this image. And the image creator told that the image should be humoristic with the text. How? May I excuse?
And told a short excuse: There´s such imagery in Tom&Jerry etc. where animals gets beaten. Wait a moment?
This is a real photo not a Looney Tunes cartoon, right?
All right then you want to put some Looney Tunes humor into your silly photograph?

I was gone mad. :S

With the text this image gets a new and twisted meaning "Like someone is adjusting the cat with the drill".
However the picture was taken in a situation where a cat was only sniffing a drill which was nearby. It was not held by anyone.

Still some people insulted me when I tried to make a post about improving the image policy on their site. How narrow minded and nihilistic can a community get?
Personal insultings without punishments and vulgar behavior is just the way of forum policy? For my surprise not only the basic users on the forum but also moderator insulted me by saying "They may have lauched at Animalia".

I was a young man when the Rave music came to Finland. We went to raves or made our own raves too. So this blog writing is bit of a nostalgic journey from the past to today.

In the raves you could be yourself and wear funny clothes without someone staring at you. The DJ at the parties was only there to play good music not exactly to be a egocentric superstar that everyone admired. DJs main thing was to make people dance and have fun. Also the music that was played was surely enough underground and kind of music you did not hear in other so called mainstream places (pubs).

For example my favorite rave parties was "Time Tunnel" raves where I was raving with my friends at 5 o´clock on the morning fueled with only bottle water and some cigarettes. So no drugs and raves. I still bumped into that attitude few years back with someone saying that I should know drugs since I produce electronic music. I have only smoked tobacco and drinked alcohol that´s all. So no drugs.

Nowadays the scene has grown into wrong direction because of DJ worship phenomena. I think that "mega DJs" sell more "concerts" than ever because the foreign DJ mags : DGMag etc. are constantly hyping up these so called DJ charts. The charts are only stupid fan base driven lists which are only for marketing DJ popularity. In my opinion these lists have nothing to do with so called good electronic music. The main purpose of lists are only to display who is the best DJ in the world and who is not.

In my opinion DJ Tiesto´s music is crap. His music and mainly him is celebrated by brainless idiots who don´t know anything about good music. Marketing and hype works like a brainwash for these poor people who don´t have a developed musical mind or analytic attitude for music. My opinion has nothing to do that I would envy this person but everything to do with reflecting my opinion. The scene has turned off from celebrating the music onto celebrating the person who plays the music. DJ is just a record player? He is not a God? Isn´t he? So stop banging fists on the front of the mega hyper dj you stupid idiots and concentrate your body and feel the music! Is the DJ only reason why you came and not the music? Stop celebrating someones ego and go to some real music concert where bands are playing with real instruments!

I believe that people who follow the mass do not know shit about real electronic music.
For example is dutch trance music real electronic music? I think that mass produced shit called trance from that country is not. Is eardrums destroying HC Gabber or dutch hardcore electronic music? This certainly has got the "buy me" label attached. Perhaps it was meant to be because they want to sell it as much as possible. So it is for consumers of music but definitely for not people who have a good taste in music. (IMHO)

Perhaps it´s the easyness of producing not mentioning about technology price dropping down all the time. Even now it´s not that expensive to setup a home music studio that is also very tiny and does not took resources or space. When compared to so called old school producers it´s easier and faster to produce music without needing to have the space for musical instruments: synths, drumkits, sequencers etc. It´s all in your pc or mac and the cpu processing power takes care of the instruments/effects/mixing and outputting the sounds and all that.

I hope I don´t insult some mega super world dj by writing this or a fan of such. This is my personal view of things and nothing personal about these dj´s I write about. These e-mail scams keep coming again. Also there´s a request to join into a Yahoo group. Never believe this because they are all lies. Some of the music stuff I want to mention. These are suitable mainly for producers and djs not for real songwriters perhaps. But in a case you miss a drummer and a bass player there are quite a bunch of real recorded material for sale. Also with a high quality. There are very much free loop/sample websites offering free loops which often are low quality and garbage. I must say this bluntly but most free sample websites are full crap.
I have only bookmarked very few which are worth mentioning and here´s couple of them: Platinumloops and Zenhiser. These websites have got some high quality loops and samples which are suitable for almost any music production. The Zenhiser samples are better suitable for dj and dance producer I think. In Platinumloops there´s vast range or samples from Hip Hop, Jazz, Drum and Bass to Rock and Metal to choose from.

Often you may bumb into these spam e-mails or internet banners and ads that say "work at home", "quit your dayjob" or even "fire your boss and get rich at home".
You may also meet some people who are trying to recruit and manipulate you to join into a "network". They may be even your friends. Never believe because they may have totally been brainwashed.

99,9% of these programs are made by some bunch of lazy people who have got enough computer skills to get a webhosting and are able to use Microsoft Frontpage. People who run the sites not always have to know anything about HTML. This makes it even easier for "not computer savvy people" because most of scam sites are transferrable. This means it is possible to copy the ready HTML code in order to put up a similar but a duplicate scam site. Of course with your personal signature to quarantee something like get rich by reading e-mails, typing data forms, assembling toys at home.

In personal experience none 0% of these internet "getting rich quick" schemes are working for real. Perhaps even worse are online/offline chain letters where online part takes action when someone mails put your name on this letter and send it to next one with 10 $ enclosed. In my studying time I was desperate (and stupid) to try this kind of scam. I dreamed a bag of money soon filling up. Of course nothing happened and I lost my 10$. Of course this is peanuts but I have heard people lost even bigger money.

There is also called pyramid scheme. Same type of scam is used by bigger pyramid schemes like "Golden products" where people buy some starter product package with expensive price. Then these people who are joined "the pyramid network" sell the products to their friends and colleagues in order to get some tiny little profit. Do the maths yourself and ask yourself a question, "Is it worth it?". For example buying a product package with 100$ or 80 € which real value is perhaps 50% of that.
In late 90´s around 95-97 there was a boom of pyramid scheme marketing also in Finland. The times were good for the takers because there was big money crisis in early 90´s. Many people lost their monies to banks and companies fell down.
Typical and desperate people who joined these pyramid scams were people who had millions of dept.

Hello dear blog readers!

This time I have more geeky promoting idea for music in the Internet.
I have quite good yet very basic idea of promoting artists in my location in Second Life.

The more artists means the more listeners. I have seen this working also at last.fm . Usually a diversity of music and different artists should drive more listeners to any site/place/forum/virtual reality.

How does it work?

For example I have a music store at Second Life. I put a notecard giver or a url giver script into a virtual object - for example a info wall object with an opening script for artist page or just any page eg. http://www.digitalbeatmusic.org

This is nothing new but bit more interesting than just going on a forum on the Internet.

How the Slurl works?

In Second Life the urls are bit different because them are 3d-location coordinates "in world" rather than ip-adresses. This may sound bit geeky but the teleportation system works that way that it moves your avatar into right position in SL. Teleporation needs the right coordinates which is simply called a landmark LM or a SLURL which stands for second life url.

Roland TB-303 bassline modifications and brief acid music history

The original TB-303

The classic and a cult music device of electronic music is still the Roland TB-303 Bassline.
At time it was very good for creating basic basslines to support band that didn´t had a basist
but some DJ´s realised to go bit further by modifying the resonance and frequency and voila charasteristic "squelch" sound of acid house was born somewhere in mid 80´s in Chicago USA.

Nowadays there are various mods which are modified TB-303 bassline devices. In it´s time the functionality was rather limited for creating basslines within´ certain frequency area. With the modifications it is possible to go beyond these frequency restrictions and more.

In my opinion there´s cheap looking buttons in this modification.
The modification prices are in australian dollars in this kangaroo mod of TB-303.

The sound: It is said that the deep bass sounds can go even much lower with devilfish than with original teebee.

I had a geek childhood. Along with my favorite hobby with computer stuff was collecting manga style mecha assembly kits. And of course watching the Transformers animated series on SKY channel. Actually the SKY channel was first official satellite channels in Finland. We did not had satellite cable connection so I watched the Transformers when visiting my cousins.

I remember I must have been about 10 years old when there was some assembled
manga robot and hangar theme kit. In the same time I had the transformers animated movie poster.

That day the robot design was rather bulky and there was no sign of any doped up
models like there is in the new Transformers movie.

I posted about the track duration issue via my cdbaby´s artist account. There´s option "report a problem" in Digital Distribution where you can post a problem if there is one. I believe the tracks "Manic Street Skills" and "Talking Transistors" had been ripped from the audio master cd inproperly by cdbaby. This is because I have listened the audio master before sending it to cdbaby.

Nevertheless I found myself blaming cdbaby and iTunes though I had sent cdbaby both cd and wav files. So after all it´s been a technical issue in cd audio ripping and this issue has got nothing to do with iTunes at all.

There´s been also a cut in communication because I first sent the audio cd to cdbaby and after one month they said they still haven´t got it. This made me feel that the master cd delivery has been lost by "us mail" and then decided to send them audio as wav files. Of course they must have had it but communication about arrival had not gone further since they are several people working at cdbaby.

What I have learned is that only good way to release a digital album is to send only 16bit wav files (44.1 kHz). Then there will be no technical issues in audio ripping or anything. Or perhaps receiver who has got slow Internet connection will suffer long downloading time but I think that will be a minor issue when compared that album is released with wrong length of tracks.

After all cdbaby is the best Digital Distribution I know. The issue was also handled in a professional manner.

My music files on Breathing album screwed at iTunes?

One day after album release at iTunes
I noticed something weird in my iTunes tracks in iTunes Store.
My first reaction was that I did not recall myself making any new tunes under 3 minutes for the new album.

Second reaction was a sleepless night as I realised something has gone wrong.

Then I deciced to take some action first thing on the next morning so
I mailed both cdbaby and iTunes Store support about the
track length issue.

For all people who likes my music and is about to buy:
Please don´t buy my tracks Manic Street Skills and
Talking Transistors before iTunes or Cdbaby Digital Distribution
has solved this issue.
This may be either a mistyped track length issue or if worse then
the tracks audio might be cut off for some reason in encoding/
data transfer progress etc.

The real reason will be hopefully solved and my tracks will be fixed
with right lengths.

Here´s original playlist in my Winamp with 16bit master audio files which were used
in Digital Distribution. Here you can also see the original song lengths.

New Digital Beat album "Breathing" is now (at last) released at iTunes.

Electronic album with acid breaks and drum and bass. Title track was recorded from human voice and mixed into futuristic breaks style track. This album is available only in Digital Distribution. No physical CD is for sale.

I am really excited how people will react to my new album. This is just because this is bit different style of music what I have released before. It´s more like breakbeat oriented and not very much club/mainstream style. I think that can be also good to develop music artistically rather than making very club sounding music.

In my opinion most of commercial music is rather crappy that is "club". So I decided to make something that is also listenable than trendy club stuff that I don´t personally like that much.

But of course this music will surely have got some trance/club elements but I would not intentionally following any mainstream styles.

Serj Tankian - my kind of artist!

I just ordered Serj Tankian´s debut solo album - "Elect The Dead". I really liked him singing also in System Of A Down album Mezmerize. Which I think is a very intensive and interesting album with so many moods and styles changing and blending all the time. However songs are making same pattern of singing style. There´s angry style of moods and light style of moods and some funny little sing sung parts too. Who can say this music is not funny. It´s so damn intelligent and dark kind of funny at the same time. If this music would be a movie genre it would be a dark comedy. There Serj Tankian would be some head character with lines coming out from his mouth like a brimstone from hell.

"Elect The Dead" however is like the style of System Of a Down but more with personal approach. Of course it is because it´s a solo album. The tracks are perhaps not that violent sounding than in S.O.A.D. albums. Songs are very political and protests against war (mostly USA acts of war), anti depression pills and about miserable human life. It´s all sung from the heart and very pleasurable to listen.
For example one of these sad songs are "Saving Us".

Starting small music biz in second life - Beat Box Store

I rented a small store when I put first Music store in second life. I thought it was easy to promote music in second life. It seemed that it was not that easy. I tried to hangout with some djs and yet managed to get some friends of them. First dj stuff were sold but I never made some real friends out of dj group I´ve met at Sisu island. After all the sim is now sold to other owner at Sisu.

The second Beat Box Store is locate at Paradise Island near the 4Ever club.
I´ve only sold one DJ Pult with a dj animation on that shop. So let´s call that a start. There´s also a big music production station for sale.

This is a very short but basic tutorials for music producers who are new to Propellerheads Recycle program. Recycle is a program or actually it's a tool for slicing beat based samples or beats so to speak. In this tutorial I´m gonna show how to slice a beat with 1/4 time signature. I´m not gonna embed the video to the blog because I want you to visit at Digital Beat Music of course. Hopefully the speech is clear enough because I had some trouble with video recording software. Some video codecs record voice very badly. However the video itself gives also some info of how to do the sample slicing.

New Ghost In The Shell - SAC Solid State Society trailer

I´m a bit of anime geek. I watched the previous movie Innocence which I remember was bit different than the SAC tv series. It´s more darker and more adult. Perhaps this movie will follow the same kind of storytelling style. The trailer looks very promising.
The music is the same japan pop style of funky electronica by Yoko Kanno. Personally I don´t like all the songs because they´re bit cheeky but some are very nice and well produced. Also got to mention that the music sound is produced is bit differently than in western animations. It´s not too loud or anything but very smooth even with guitar riffs.

The techno stuff in these movies will include several robot types but with coolest design are in tachikomas which are police type of robots. Also different kind of floating in the air computer interfaces will surely be visually stimulating. There´s not that great visual stuff for example in Final Fantasy movie than in GITS series.

What is your mainstream percentage?

Perhaps you haven´t even thought about it. What is my mainstreamness when it comes to listening music? Some people who only listen narrow area of certain style of music may achieve a high mainstream percentage. Perhaps people who listen to Linking Park, Nelly Furtado or Madonna or perhaps other mainstream crap. Popular music is not perhaps the best when it comes to listening pleasure. It all is so sexy and loud but the music itself is all sounding the same.
It all comes to what you may have listened in last.fm or on your mp3 player in your pc. I'm not sure if there´s some spyware hidden in the last.fm because everytime you listen something with winamp your music is shown at last.fm . That could also described as Taste-O-Meter ?

Let´s make a little test. My score with current listens is 4.86%

After listening Maroon 5 and Linking Park the score is still the same. The new value should be calculated some moment later. Database cannot possibly update latest songs instantly.

I´m not sure but my first album Underground Industry should be in digital music dirtribution. Not sure why it was not there. I got newsletter from CDBaby.com today. They finally had realised the thing what I had dreamed for about 2 years. Links to other websites!!! The best and the worst The Prodigy remixes?

I´m a big The Prodigy fan. I´ve listened all tracks many times and enjoy also playing tracks on my live dj sets. However some of the latest tracks are not that good on the new album "Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned".
They sound more like softsynth produced than older tracks. That´s only natural because Liam made tracks using Reason.
Ok, the remixes from different classic The Prodigy tracks are been made very much in different styles. One of the best remixes is Pendulum remix from Voodoo People. It gives the track some modern edge and new style and still keeps the original idea strong.
There´s also very bad remixes which flattens the original track into some smegma. For example iDrake remix from No Good sounds very flat. Does this remixer make music that should be listened with ipod referring to the name? Only samples that are good are the breakbeat samples. The sounds are so flat and the remix does not do justice for original. This is just my personal opinion but some producers should give out the final track for professional to master. Perhaps this is just a producing aspect? I still think that every track should explode when you hear it and not sound like a dental floss version of the original which had the edge on sounds. Also doubling the track speed loses some depth and dynamics of the original.

oldschool tracker musicians

I am one of those oldschool home computer music geeks who started making their music with computer in early 90´s. At that time there was so called trackers which were very popular among computer musicians. Most music makers were from UK and Scandinavia. Couple of the well known musicians of that time are Bjorn Lynne (Norway) Purple Motion (Finland)and Skaven (Finland). I was not very good at composition techniques first and did most of the music using samples from ready tracks. The music files are called as MOD files in old tracker software. There was a first ever tracker program which I used was a noisetracker for Atari. The second I've used the most is of course Protracker which I remember was first programmed for Amiga computer.

Sound digitizing

I did also some sampling by using a DIY 8-bit sound digitizer. I bought this device from my friend. It was possible to sample everything from vinyls and tv-series. It was surely fun. Digitizer had a 9 volt battery and serial port connection. Also a very basic program which was not very user friendly. Perhaps because it was also DIY.

First of the decent pc trackers was screamtracker which I met somewhere in 1992-1994.

Other interesting background about tracker software , demoscene and programmers

Actually it is true that Scream Tracker is a first multi-track digital sequencer created by members of Finland's Future Crew. This demoscene group was one of my favorite groups. They may have mangled their name into Mature Furk in late 90's. They had made also a favorite 3d-benchmark program Future Mark. Later on the name was changed into 3D Mark. Their company Futuremark is still in the 3d-engine business.

It combines the moving 3d-graphics with some of well programmed graphics. There´s also some fine pixel graphics too. The soundtrack is also very catchy and it is synced in realtime with moving animations.

There is only one release showing at the moment. There's more releases by DBM than one. There's now only "Underground Industry" which has been accepted as a release in discogs.
