Beatmaka.com underground music with attitude? Or music without underground attitude?

I have submitted or at least tried to submit some of my tracks into a music website
called beatmaka.com. In my humble opinion Beatmaka.com slogan really does not do any favor to real underground scene since their music is mostly imitating all mainstream like music out there. When you visit and listen to every second artist you are able to notice there´s anything underground or original music on this website.

Every track sounds produced into best clarity and listening but there´s no real artistic talents that can produce original music outside the commercial club sound.

It is almost like a bedroom producers edition of DI.fm

There you have it. Another music website without underground attitude. Whoring to the commercial sound. I had only 2 tracks on this site and I have deleted another today. Now I have only one track and not wanting to upload more since the preview panel except that you produce the sound to meet some club standard sound.
Well there´s some better sites that you are free to upload without panel judgement process. For example reverbnation.com and myspace.com . It really does not help producers to develop their music or creative process when the track must be 100% ready and "pressed".
So from the creative point of view all music uploaded this site must be perfectly crafted and made as a final product for mass consumption.
But does this kind of process kill the creativity? In my opinion, yes.

The review panel:

What Do You Do Exactly?
The main goal of beatmaka.com is to deliver a site with high quality content. We do everything possible to select only the best music without compromise. Our Review Panel checks each incoming track and assures that only the best ones get online.
-----

From my point of view they only kill creative talents without constructive critique
about the tracks. Most of the reviews consider the producing side of music not really about the composition of artistic aspect of the track itself.

For example here is a feedback of my track "Arpeggiator One" from year 2006.

Reviewer: Marc Hedinger
Recommendation: no

Review:
I think the idea of the track's quite good but the way it's produced's far from optimal. The structures of the melodies, harmonies are pretty simple.

-----

I don´t want to bash the reviewer since they only do their job. But there´s nothing constructive on this review as it comes to artistic side.
The track is pretty simple. Perhaps it´s meant to be, right?
However there´s positive feedback about the idea.
So back to the production. Ok, no problem. Perhaps I make a club track with sidechain compression and limit the sound in Cool Edit and the track will be accepted.
From my point of view the panel does not seem to understand that there´s also some other forms of electronic music than that commercial (mostly crap) dance music they might only probably like. It´s often called synthesizer or electronic music and does not need to be pumped up as loud till your ears bleed. Of course there might be some EQ and mastering to be made
to make the track as final.
However sites like this give really narrow point of view about the electronic music in general.

Ok. So that´s enough critique about the review panel.

It´s not that bad site when you want to listen to some genres like
Trance, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass and Dance.

Some of my favorites are Mechanik Project:
http://www.beatmaka.com/music/artist.php?id=4588

ps: to add the review header was:

Unfortunately we do not think that "Arpeggiator One" fits into our portfolio.

They are presenting music as theirs you can see? Not the artists but as like a labels artists.

New album Dark Sun is out now!

Finally it´s out at iTunes. Digital Beat - Dark Sun.

Digital Beat - Dark Sun

Why I released thru reverbnation? Here´s some cold facts:

1. Released only on the digital music stores with most of traffic.

After iTunes it´s released on other major digital music stores like Rhapsody, Napster, emusic etc.

2. Artist keeps 100% of royalties

The reason was that I wanted to try their distro was purely that there was no middle man. In reverbnation´s DD all the royalties are paid out straight to artists without any percentage taken off.

As in their FAQ page:

How much do you make off my songs?

ReverbNation does not take any percentage of the royalties from your music

3. It´s cheaper to release at Reverbnation than in cdbaby. Not forced to buy an UPC code that is originally needed only for CD releases.

Reverbnation: $34.95
Cdbaby: $55.00

4. Web 2.0 style website with lots of interaction for fans and great promotion tools like Artist signup scripts, embedded players, banners etc.
None of that stuff at cdbaby. I might say cdbaby is a dinosaur of digital distribution? There´s not even a simple RSS feed on album pages? No preview mp3 embedding? No traffic to album pages?

There was one request about rss feed inclusion at cdbaby in 2007 but nothing has still happened.
http://cdbaby.org/stories/07/11/14/8642231.html

5. No traffic. No charts

At cdbaby there´s no traffic for a bedroom electronic producer like me. I am not Venetian Snares you see?

It´s kinda sad to see the traffic for different albums because I also bought some banners to get traffic from other sites. And tried to promote with links.
Still my first album has only 7227 hits after it´s release in 2003 june.
So in 5 years I got bit over 7000 hits and most hits from Ishkur.com where I bought
banner advertising. Hits from ishkur are 137 and most of traffic is between 1-4 hits per link/site.

At reverbnation after 2 years I have 27162 hits. This is because I have this cool widget that I can embed on various sites and blogs whatever.

You can see the difference? It´s awesome at reverbnation. :)

New album "Dark Sun" is coming soon

This is official and most complete information about
the forthcoming album yet.

The album graphics and the creative process

In the beginning of album art creation I made some background work for the album by googling articles and images about finnish Lapland.
At first I did not had enough inspiration for the album graphics. So
I used this background information to feed my brains
before doing any sketches. One can say that collecting information
is a small part of the whole creative process.

The graphics on the cover was inspired by the lapland
shaman imagery of the sun. If you have ever seen a shaman drum
from the Lapland then you may have seen these symbols of people, animals, nature
etc.

The symbolics are also based on the old finnish cosmology.

Then I combined the shaman imagery and the modern computer graphics but I let it be
as is without post producing it too much. This is because I wanted
it to be nineties trance cover style. My music "Dark Sun" is
not sounding like the mainstream trance of today. It´s more like
underground and personal vision of the genre combined with many electronic elements.
Music on the album is simply put:
not too much mainstream but artistic and creative style of trance
that is good to listen and dance.

The tracklist on the album:
1. Digital Beat - The Strider (original mix) 6:49
2. Digital Beat - Chemical Reaction 4:24
3. Digital Beat - Frontline Acidly 6:40
4. Digital Beat - Fusion Drive 4:44
5. Digital Beat - Air Magic 4:19
6. Digital Beat - Dark Sun 6:27
7. Digital Beat - Ripple Wire 4:41
8. Digital Beat - Arpeggiator I 5:00
9. Digital Beat - The Strider (breakbeat edit) 6:11
10. Digital Beat - Underground Industry II 6:02

Electro Psytrance. What the fucking genre is that?

I would like to bash this amateurish promotion newsletter to pieces. I respect the person who is writing this so I don´t reveal the name of the newsletter. Still the genre mistake made me angry and it´s the only reason I want to write this out.

Today I got this promotion newsletter X where I had submitted some info about my track
"Robotwerk". I am not a genre purist but I see red if someone is writing genre totally out of the line. So the track is pure electro/techno track and a bit reminding the style of Kraftwerk. One who knows the group surely knows it´s electro and techno when we speak in genres.

Here´s a copy pasted clip of the newsletter where genre mistake was:

We would also like to present a really mellow Electro psy Trance piece of music from Kimmo who is from Finland. The track is called Robotwerk and you can check it out here at reverbnation.

http://www.reverbnation.com/digitalbeat

Electro psytrance ? What the fucking genre is that?

I hope the writer can realise the error. Surely in a passionate burst of anger I wrote a negative feedback and a request of correcting the mistake. Surely I will receive some e-mail from the author. Or not... lol
If not then I must be creating some new Electro psytrance. haha.
Actually it might just work!

Roland TB-303 bassline modifications and brief acid music history

The original TB-303

The classic and a cult music device of electronic music is still the Roland TB-303 Bassline.
At time it was very good for creating basic basslines to support band that didn´t had a basist
but some DJ´s realised to go bit further by modifying the resonance and frequency and voila charasteristic "squelch" sound of acid house was born somewhere in mid 80´s in Chicago USA.

Nowadays there are various mods which are modified TB-303 bassline devices. In it´s time the functionality was rather limited for creating basslines within´ certain frequency area. With the modifications it is possible to go beyond these frequency restrictions and more.

Devil Fish modification of TB-303

http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/

In my opinion there´s cheap looking buttons in this modification.
The modification prices are in australian dollars in this kangaroo mod of TB-303.

The sound: It is said that the deep bass sounds can go even much lower with devilfish than with original teebee.

The looks. It looks like the same old teebee but with Devil Fish text and some new red plastic buttons and cheap looking switches. Here´s how it looks: http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/df-front-q7.jpg

However I also found that there are some other Devil Fish mods with better cases with different colors.
Take a look of these monsters: http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/DF04-R-B-cr-1000x765.jpg
Looks much better than the original, huh? Feeling the acid?

When you compare them you can instantly see the quality of the parts in case and buttons.
What comes to website looks the better looking site also makes better mod.

The Be(a)st modification?

Concept

"To enlarge upon (rather than abuse) the iconic machine, with an emphasis on musicality as opposed to novelty, and to create a hybrid of new and old,
with a production finish."

http://www.thebeast.co.uk/303/index.html

The case looks really good with good knobs.

"The reason why" comes up when reading the parts details further:
New function knobs use genuine/original Roland parts (harvested from other machines)

Also a minor downside is that they may have to "abuse" other Roland machines to get the original Roland knobs.

Other interests of acid

Typical sound of acid bassline (Example made with Karma FX vst plugin /303like 10 basic patch)

The Edge compilation with Digital Beat track - Powerline Acid

Shockwave Sounds has released a royalty free music compilation "The Edge" which also includes Digital Beat (Kimmo Rinta-Pollari) track "Powerline Acid". There´s 2 versions of the track "Powerline Acid".
Powerline Acid (the full version) and Powerline Acid (Underscore).
The underscore is an alternative mix version which does not include main lead acid synth. So this version is good for example as for background music purpose.

Starting small music biz in second life - Beat Box Store

I rented a small store when I put first Music store in second life. I thought it was easy to promote music in second life. It seemed that it was not that easy. I tried to hangout with some djs and yet managed to get some friends of them. First dj stuff were sold but I never made some real friends out of dj group I´ve met at Sisu island. After all the sim is now sold to other owner at Sisu.

The second Beat Box Store is locate at Paradise Island near the 4Ever club.
I´ve only sold one DJ Pult with a dj animation on that shop. So let´s call that a start. There´s also a big music production station for sale.

The third and current store and the club "Bedlam" can be found at Danger Island.

Music store by Snocap

This new music store which can be embedded to any (almost) website is provided
by Snocap music store. At Snocap any artist can create their own musi store.
However this service is brought to me by cdbaby.com because they have a distribution
deal with Snocap. So I don´t have to worry about album setup. After all uploading all tracks from four albums which I have released would be quite time consuming task.

You can alsoo share this "mini music store" with your friends and fans by clicking "spread the word". It gives you options to copy the code to website or blog. Even e-mails should handle it if it´s html. Please note. I noticed that there is a minor bug in the code. It misses the closing tag.
You should include < / embed > code at the end.
